Adopt-A-Spot at School

How Adopt-a-Spot works

A child and their whanau takes responsibility for the care of a small special area of the school for the year. Being kaitiaki/caretaker of an adopted spot means taking care of it by weeding, trimming, picking up litter, watering, replanting etc.

Nestegg will help with supplies of things like plants and mulch if need be.

This is an activity Ngaio School children can do as a Strive project (our ‘homework programme’ for years 3-6) or independently as a family. The idea is the caretaking children are supported by their whanau, and will do this work out of school hours. You probably need to do at least one care-taking  session a term, but you can do it every week if you want.

Nestegg keeps a ‘spot list’ so everyone knows what’s being looked after. There’s a map to show which areas can be adopted: look for an area with a white label. Click here to see the map: Adopt-a-Spot map April 2014

If you want to adopt a spot, ask your teacher. They’ll find you the form to fill in — your parents or guardian has to sign it to say your family is keen. Then your teacher will contact the Nestegg ‘Adopt-a-Spot’ coordinator. You can also get more information from the Strive lead teachers Pip Cook (Kakapo) and Amanda Frater (Tui).
